The Rabi Council of Leaders has denied there are plans to re-open phosphate mining on Banaba Island in Kiribati.
Some landowners on the island believe the Fiji-based Council is supporting a bid to recommence mining as part of a rehabilitation program.
But the Executive Director of the Rabi Council of Leaders, Marlie Rota says Banaba Rehabilitation Program does not involve mining but will return the island to its pre-mining state.
